Getting Started

The Federation of Family History Societies has published the Australasian Really Useful Information Leaflet (pdf, 3 MB) which has a list of useful websites and a good starting guide.

School Admissions

Research Room
Research Room
For school admission research enquiries, contact Mrs Rae Wilson, 113 Hawthornden Road, Christchurch 8042, email wil.fam@xtra.co.nz. Before you request a look-up we need some idea of where the family was living (electoral rolls or Wise’s Directories) and also the father/mother’s name, especially if a common surname. There is a 100 year closure on release of the records unless you can provide proof of death, so the child’s date of birth needs to be at least 100 years ago. A self-addressed envelope should be sent with a donation please – cheques to be made out to NZSG Canterbury Branch.

Burials and BDM

Christchurch City Council cemetery burial records are available online at http://heritage.christchurchcitylibraries.com/Cemeteries/.
The Canterbury Branch Library holds headstone transcripts of many Canterbury cemeteries, and transcripts of Baptism, Marriage and Burials from local Parish Registers.

Members Interests

The NZSG website has a Members Interests page which is a database searchable by keyword, e.g. surname, ship or occupation. This database can be searched by both NZSG members and the public, however only NZSG members can enter data into the database. If you find someone with a similar interest you can fill out a request form to make contact with the member.

FamilySearch

Canterbury Branch is an Affiliate Library of FamilySearch, a service provided by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

FamilySearch microfilms and microfiche can be ordered to be read at the Branch Library.

The FamilySearch website has an extensive online Family History Library catalogue.

Once you have found the item(s) you want, you can place your order online with FamilySearch.

Before placing your first order online, you must register with the FamilySearch website and get your own free login and password.

Points to note when setting up a new FamilySearch account:

  • Select which Family History Centre you wish to view the film or fiche at.  (This can be one of the three NZSG Affiliated Libraries (Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch) or any of the other Family History Centres available.)
  • You must provide your personal address.  (This is NOT used as a delivery address.  The items will be delivered to the Affiliate Library or Family History Centre of your choice.)
  • You must use your credit card to pay.
